There has been a controversy over whether or not .edu and .gov links are worth more than .com links. The controversy began when websites receiving such links started rising within Google and other search engines directly after receiving links from .edu and .gov sites. Further, it doesn’t help the opposition that .edu and .gov sites frequent the top SERPs either.
Why you think they are seen as authority:
- .edu and .gov are seen as top results consistently through many niches.
- Constant parading by link sellers.
Why they aren’t worth more:
- Matt Cutts himself stated they aren’t.
- There’s no reason to. .edu links aren’t as hard to get as one might think and Google knows this. Just because some kid attending St. John’s University thinks your site is cool doesn’t mean it will get more authority.
Why not every .edu and .gov link matters:
- Student sites don’t have more authority. Any ‘authority’ given to the sites are because of links from another page on the domain and everyone else who was fooled into thinking it was an authority, thus they linked to it. Of course if that happens, by all means get a link.
- Student sites usually aren’t longterm, colleges delete them.
