When thinking of designing a website, one of the most important aspects is deciding whether it will be a liquid or fixed layout. A liquid layout is one which moves according to browser size whereas a fixed layout stays the same no matter what.
While deciding which layout to use, it is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Liquid Layouts
Advantages:
- Always fills the entire screen.
- When font is increased within the browser, the design stays the same.
- Within small resolutions the layout may look destroyed.
Disadvantages:
- Use of too many images can be troublesome within the overall design.
- Designs can be troublesome to create.
Fixed Layouts
Advantages:
- Designs are easier to create since it will be the same size on all resolutions. The use of image backgrounds, header and footer logos, etc. are all easier to design and make look good.
- Within small resolutions the design will stay the same, thus won’t be destroyed like liquid layouts.
- Will always be centered (if you want it to be), so it may look cleaner.
- The design is usually seen as more professional within the design community, although isn’t always the best choice within others.
Disadvantages:
- In extra-large screen resolutions the font may be too small to read.
- When font is increased the layout will may be destroyed depending on how it is made.
