Maple Story Response

I received an ‘interesting’ response by a reader last night on my post about Maple Story Global. The comment was rather interesting, so I decided to respond in its own post.

Overhere says:

The problem is that the technology is just not there yet for the $$$’s needed to invest. Microsoft has always been very good at adding extras that keep developers tied to them. Maplestory is a good example. The real element of ignorance falls on your lack of knowledge in software development. As much as I dislike MS they control the market. Welcome to the minority and with the new kid on the block Firefox. The average cost of developing a game is 12Million. If you where the owner of a game company you would be doing exactly what the owners of Maplestory are. Makeing a return on your investment. Did you think every reader out here is ignorant to the facts of life?

My response:

Programming a game for an OS has nothing to do with coding a website. They are two completely different concepts and require completely different skills. And by the way, it’s actually EASIER to code for Firefox than MSIE due to W3C standards. Although Firefox is not completely W3C compatible, as per the Acid 2 test, it is far more advanced with understanding HTML and CSS along with transparent images.

Furthermore, the game is independent from the browser which it is downloaded from. Another example besides Maple Story is Ragnarok. Ragnarok’s website, along with many of its private servers, works completely fine with Firefox, although the game runs on Flash through MSIE.

As well, not coding for ‘the new kid’, who happens to hold a nice share around 12-15% of the market, is completely arrogant on the part of the sites creators. They are the ones who are losing members along with credibility, not the users themselves.

Being ‘ignorant to the facts of life’ is besides the whole point of our little ‘discussion’. The fact of the matter is, 12% is a viable number in any statistic. Look at the population of the United States. What would happen if 12% of the nation, Blacks, were not allowed to hold a job?

Saying that I know nothing about software development isn’t even relevant in this aspect in a few ways. First of all, I do know Flash, PHP, HTML, CSS, Javascript and AJAX (if you want to consider that something of its own). Second, even if I didn’t know any computer language, it wouldn’t matter because I am the user. The user has his or her right to their own opinion along with having the right to express that opinion. When the user is in the sizable minority, it gives farther leverage for standards to be met. You don’t have to be a genius to figure that out.
