YPN and Adsense Comparison

I have been using both Yahoo Publisher Network and Adsense ads for quite sometime now. Both hold their advantages and both have negative aspects.

YPN advantages:
Higher CPM
Lowest minimum bid higher (5 cents higher than Adsense)
Has Ad Targeting
Better interface (possibly personal preference)

Google Adsense advantages:
Higher CTR
Ads are more on target
Color Palettes and Channels (tracking categories) are editable
Channel earnings are updated on same-day basis
Has link units

I love Yahoo! and their Publisher Network is getting better, but at the moment I can’t see many publishers switching over. Google just has more ontarget ads (although Yahoo! has improved greatly over the past week especially with Ad Targetting). Google also currently has quicker payouts and direct deposit (although I suspect Yahoo! to get both by the end of the year, if not then early spring before going out of BETA).

Yahoo! does have one (very large) chip on its shoulder, a devote (and higher paying) community of adveratisers. With this, Yahoo! might just win the battle. Many smaller publishers who already get a low CTR (less than 1%) with Adsense may get a largely better result from Yahoo! With a 10 cent minimum bid compared to Googles 5 cent min. Yahoo! will even get smaller niche sites to switch over.

With my poetry site, I have been recieving a 100% increase in earnings from YPN while recieving a much lower (more than 50% lower) CTR. This is largely due to the 10 cent minimum. With Adsnese, many sites in my niche bid the minimum (5 cents), automatically increasing the earnings with Yahoo!. And with Ad Targetting, those who target a different type of user are able to pick what Ads they want to show. Don’t try to fool your visitors though.. they won’t click on Ads for finding a new home if they are on a site about dogs.

I have not made decided on which to run primarily yet, so I will continue running both Adsense and YPN. Nonetheless, this has hopefully helped those of you who have not been accepted yet to understand more about YPN compared to Adsense.
