Many websites and web developers use Alexa rankings to judge how much traffic a particular website receives, whether it be for paid reviews, exchanging links or just data. However, Alexa rankings can easily be modified.
What is Alexa? Alexa is a website that allows you to download a toolbar; then the toolbar retrieves information from your browser like the websites you visit and time spent on them.
How to exploit Alexa rankings
- Constantly refresh a webpage. Well, not too fast or it won’t record the visit. But if done every 5 seconds Alexa will record a new page view to its traffic rankings.
- Use an auto-refresher. Some browsers like Opera have 5 second refresh tools, use this and Alexa toolbar will record a visit every 5 seconds.
- Have friends use the auto-refresher. This will increase your rankings even more since more people will be doing it.
- Put the Alexa button on your website. This isn’t exactly exploiting, but it does inflate traffic rankings by tracking all visitors instead of only the ones with the toolbar.
Although some methods aren’t seen as ‘ethical’ and maybe a little leaning to the black hat side, we might as well do it while we can. Anyone who uses Alexa’s data seriously has this coming to them anyway
