Apple disclosed the updated iPod nano on September 5th and made it available the following weekend. View the new iPod nano commercial.
The new iPod nano features many new specs:
- Height: 69.8 mm/2.75 inches
- Width: 52.3 mm/2.06 inches
- Depth: 6.5 mm/0.26 inch
- Weight: 49.2 grams/1.74 ounces
- 2-inch QVGA (320×240) screen
- New colors
- New features include browsing via Cover Flow
- New user interface
- Support for iTunes store games
- Video playback
However, there are some downfalls. According to several sources, the new iPod does not support Linux. It is also reported that with the new updates Apple has locked the song database on the newest generation of iPods. Before, although Linux users had no access to iTunes, Linux users found a way to use the database by using Amarok and gtkpod.
With the Linux community being as savvy as they are, this probably won’t last for long.

I just want to point out that no iPods are supported on Linux. Amarok and other linux apps that synch to iPods do so because the original iPod database was hacked and Apple only provided minor updates. The new iPods, as well as the iPhone, use an entirely new OS as well as an updated database. As the Amarok dev team said on their blog, if you use Linux and want to be a first-class citizen in the DAP world, don’t buy Apple.
im totally a newb but i for sure cant install linux on my 5th gen 4gig nano?
I got an Ipod nano from my girlfriend, very sweet, but of course she had no idea that it requires windows or a Mac.
Indeed I couldn’t get it to work with Linux. The device model claims to be a second generation model A426. Interrestingly, GTKPod supports the A426 but lists it as 6th gen. Anyway, the Ipod does not find any music copied to it with GTKPod or GNUpod or Banshee. Yet.
Thanks a lot Apple, thanks to you my girlfriend gave me a terrible xmas present.
