StumbleUpon is a great way to not only share interesting web pages and images, but also your own opinions on the content submitted. After thumbing up a website, you will give the site more exposure and increase the possibility of others viewing it.
The great thing about StumbleUpon is that it offers more than one way to get others to view content. One of the most under-utilized functions is the ability to send articles to friends–even ones who don’t use StumbleUpon.
What is StumbleUpon?
StumbleUpon is a service that allows you to surf the internet by using a toolbar which services random web pages whenever you click “Stumble.” You have the ability to select what category to browse and the option to rate and review each page.
You may also use StumbleUpon as a social networking site, connecting to like-minded individuals and share your findings within the group.
For more information see StumbleUpon: A Beginner’s Guide
The “Send to” Option
With the “Send to” option you have the choice of sending the page to a friend or sending it to an email.
The StumbleUpon help section stats:
If you want to share the page more immediately, use the Send this page to icon on your toolbar to:
- send a page to a mutual friend (with the option to add a brief comment) – this page will go to the top of your mutual’s “stumble queue” and they will see it when they next Stumble!
- email the page to a friend outside of SU – this has the added advantage of introducing your friend to SU
If you wish to use the “Send-to” option, the webpage does not have to be Stumbled by you or others. This means that you can send pages without stumbling them. This is useful because this allows webpages to be used for discussion purposes.
Howto Import Contacts
StumbleUpon offers a feature which allows you to easily import contacts from other services including, MSN Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, AOL, Linkedin, Facebook, and address books.
To use this feature, you simply click the “Send to” button and move your cursor down to “Import Contacts.” You will be brought to a page which lists all available import services. Once you select the service you wish to import from, the right box changes and asks you to login to the selected service.
After you have logged in, you can select which friends to invite.
Example 1: Sending a Page to a Friend
Once you’ve found a webpage you wish to send, click the “Send to” button within the StumbleUpon toolbar and pick a username.

After you click the username you wish to send the webpage to, a small dialog box appears which you can send a short message along with the page.

After the page has been sent the next time your friend comes online they will see a small red numeral next to their Stumble button. After your friend clicks it, your message appears in a yellow box across the top of their screen.
Example 2: the Email Option
Sending a webpage via email is similar to the send to a friend option. Click one the “Send-to” button again, but this time scroll to the bottom that says “All Emails.” If you wish to send the page to someone other than yourself, you must click “New Email Address…” Once you enter an email, StumbleUpon will remember the address so there is no need to type it in again. Similarly, you can remove the email address by going to “All Emails” then “Remove Email.”
After you have clicked the email you wish to send the page, you can enter a short message. An email will then be sent to the recipient’s email inbox where he or she will see the title and a link to the specific webpage along with the message you entered and a link to your profile.
Share with me
If you wish to share your Stumbles with me you can add my StumbleUpon account to your friends list: garyh84. However, StumbleUpon only allows 200 mutual friends so I may not be able to add everyone.
To share a page with me without becoming mutual friends, send your webpage to gary.hess at gmail.com and I will gladly view them.

You can’t. But then again, there is no reason to. You should send pages only to people who would be interested otherwise it defeats the point. And if you use the “Send to” function as a way for discussion then sending to only one person is all that is needed.

Great post on Stumble it.
Just wondering, is it any different from Digg? Seems to be quite a lot of work to drive blog traffic.
There’s so many including
1. EntreCard
2. SezWho
3. Digg
4. Stumble Upon
5. Technorati

It is a lot different than Digg. Although the two might sound similar in terms of traffic and voting, they are not. StumbleUpon traffic is much more spread out and recurring. With Digg, all traffic comes at one time.
Also, StumbleUpon is much harder to game, but also easier for good articles to be seen. With Digg, 90% of the front page stories are by the same 10 people.
As to your list, although I have gotten traffic from both SezWho and Technorati, I wouldn’t say either is that great. If you can manage to be on Technorati’s hot pages, that is good, otherwise I feel it is a waste of time.
SezWho is a bit weird. They have the ability to become something great, but haven’t yet. They have some work to do in that department. I don’t quite understand why someone would subscribe to someone elses comments, but more power to them if they do.

Dear Gary,
I’ve signed up but I’m getting a bit lost. How do I add people to my friends list. I don’t have that many contacts on Stumble Upon.
Any idea what else to do? I’ve just surfed some of these Stumple Upon sites and reviewed those that are interesting to me.
Sigh..
