MIT created a research initiative group to lead way for the $100 laptop. The technology however, will not be for sale. The computers will be used only by school children around the world. The initiative, OLPC, was first announced in January of 2005 by Nicholas Negroponte, Lab chairman and co-founder, at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland.
