What is RSS?

RSS is short for Really Simple Syndication. In short, it is a way to easily track your favorite websites without having to actually visit the site.

What it does
Subscribing to a RSS feed allows you to keep up to date with the latest posts from a website. It is a way to receive a quick list of the latest story headlines and sometimes full posts from your favorite websites and blogs all in one place. Instead of having to visit each site individually, you can just open your web browser or RSS reader and have them at ready for reading.

Why it’s better than bookmarking
With bookmarking you have to do all the work–you have to click through to each website to see if there is a new post. Also, if you track many websites it can become complicated and you miss out on important updates. With RSS you can see which websites and blogs are updated and read blog’s post within your RSS reader.

How to use RSS
In order to subscribe to a website, all you have to do is click the orange icon in your browser’s address bar or click the words “Subscribe to our RSS feed” on the website or blog. If your browser doesn’t support RSS or you just don’t like the looks, you can use a free web based one like Google Reader and Bloglines.

Both Google Reader and Bloglines act like email. Once you subscribe to a feed you’ll see unread entries from the sites you subscribed. After you click through to the entry, you can mark the entry as read, unread or delete it.

If you don’t feel like using a RSS reader you can use your own Email. Just enter your email address into the box and click ’subscribe.’
