I have been saying this for a long time, the internet should be free. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t be. If that means adding an internet tax to blanket the whole United States with WiFi, so be it.
However, some cities have taken the high road and done it theirself. Now with Madison, Wisconsin jumping on board, that gives five small to medium sized cities covered with WiFi: Philadelphia, San Francisco, Madison, Rio Rancho and Manassas.
So what gives? Can’t be too hard. Why not just put it through congress to have every city in America blanketed with free Wifi by 2020 and every major city blanketed by 2012? America would finally see major technical strides and possibly start a new generation of computer minded children who will eventually find cures for cancer, AIDS and (just hopefully) find out how to make a pocket sized pizza taste as good as a larger sized and leave the hunger behind all due to the information available on the web.
I have to admit, if I had the internet when I was in high school or middle school my grades would have been higher. Being able to look up math problems I don’t understand, look up science questions, find more information on a subject to write the 10 or 20 page resource paper…
We need this. Not only because Internet should be free, but because it needs to be free. The Internet is not leaving anytimes soon, so we need to dip our children into the information portal as soon as we can to give them a better chance in life and be the next great generation of America.
